Teaching Ratios and Measurement? Here's a FREE Hands-On Project That Actually Helps
Middle school brains need more than just notes and examples - they need something to do. My middle school math teacher brain needs less to do. This Potion Lab Project turns ratios and proportions into something my 6th and 7th graders can build and see (without losing the rigor!), and I made it free for you!
So, what is it?
This “craftivity” guides students through:
Scaling potion recipes using ratios and proportions
Converting units of measurement
Measuring and calculating volume
Building a 3D potion lab diorama
Everything is printable and easy to prep—just add scissors, glue, and toilet paper rolls. The labels on the potion test tubes show scaled quantities in milliliters, so students can clearly see the ratios they’ve calculated.
What’s Included
Printable templates (in color + black & white)
Student instructions
All cut-outs & 3D foldables
Potion recipe cards
Built-in calculation sheet for showing their work
How to Use It
This works beautifully as a wrap-up project after your ratios and measurement unit. You can also assign it as a sub plan, end of year project, or review before/after state testing.
I’d recommend 2–3 class periods from start to finish. Everything’s been designed to be low-prep for you and high-engagement for them.
We all want lessons that actually hits the goal of good content + engagement….and sometimes, it just takes a different approach. If you’re ready to try something that goes beyond the textbook but still covers the standards, this might be exactly what you and your students need.
