Looking for some quick, easy ideas to celebrate Pi Day in your class? READ ON!
Whether you're looking for hands-on crafts, digital activities, no-prep worksheets, or a mix of everything, I've got you covered! In this post I'm sharing all of my favorite Pi Day activities for middle school — plus some tips for making the most of the day. Scroll to the end for a freebie, too!
Why Pi Day is Worth Celebrating in Middle School
By middle school, students are working with circumference, area, geometry, and even algebraic thinking - all of which connect beautifully to Pi. Celebrating March 14th isn't just a fun distraction from regular class. It's a genuine opportunity to deepen understanding of concepts your students are already learning, wrapped up in something that feels like a party.
Plus - and I say this from experience - a classroom full of students happily cutting, coloring, solving puzzles, and possibly eating some actual pie… is a very good day to be a math teacher!
My Pi Day Activity Bundle for Middle School
Before I break down the individual activities, I want to share my complete Middle School Pi Day Activity Bundle, which includes everything below in one money-saving package. It covers grades 5–8 and has so many activities, you'll be completely sorted!

Now let's dive into each activity!
1. Pi Day Worksheet Workbook — 8 No-Prep Activities
Grades 6–8 | Print | No Prep
This is my go-to for teachers who want a full Pi Day packet they can just print and hand out. There are 8 different activities in one workbook, so you can run them as a whole-class activity, use them as stations, or spread them across Pi Day week as daily warm-ups.
Here's what's inside:
Pi Day Word Search — great for a calm starter activity
Math Crossword Puzzle — tests math vocabulary in a fun way
Brain Teasers & Logic Puzzles — perfect for your high flyers
Solve the Riddle — circumference and area problems with a punny payoff
Coordinate Graphing Mystery Picture — always a student favourite!
Pi Day Coloring Activity — relaxing and rewarding
Unit Conversions — sneaks in some great review
Fraction, Decimal & Percent Grid — solid skills practice disguised as fun
Everything is black and white, ink-friendly, and comes with a full answer key. Truly no prep — just print!
Best for: Whole class Pi Day celebration, math stations, early finishers, or sub plans.
2. Pi Day Craftivity — Simplifying Fractions & Two-Step Equations
Grades 5–8 | Print | Cut & Paste Craft
The craftivity includes two separate activities in one resource:
Simplifying Fractions with GCF
Two-Step Equations
So it works across a range of ability levels and grade groups too!
Best for: Whole class activity, bulletin board display, Pi Day celebration, fractions or equations unit review.
3. Pi Day Digital Activities — 6 Interactive Google Slides
Grades 6–8 | Digital | Google Classroom
For the 1:1 classrooms and Google Classroom teachers — this one's for you! These 6 interactive Pi Day digital activities are fully drag and drop, completely no-print, and assign in seconds through Google Classroom.
Here's what's included:
Pi Day Investigation — students calculate circumference and diameter, then divide to discover that the answer is always 3.14.
Real-World Applications — students research how Pi is used in NASA and building & construction. Great for sparking the "but when will I use this?" conversation!
Pi Picture Puzzles — pi-themed brain teasers where students guess the word or phrase. Cutie pie, pineapple, eye spy — they're adorable and kids love them!
True or False Drag & Drop — students drag the Pi symbol next to true statements about circles
Symbol Puzzle — algebraic thinking meets Pi Day fun as students find the value of each Pi-themed symbol
Solve the Riddle — circumference and area problems that spell out the answer to: "What do you call a snake that is 3.14 metres long?" (A Pi-thon, obviously. 🐍)
4. Geometry Translations Mystery Picture
Grades 7–8 | Print & Digital | Cut & Paste
This is a brilliant activity for your Year 7–8 students who are working on geometry transformations. Students apply translation rules to 10 shapes, cut them out, and paste them onto a coordinate grid — and when they're done, the shapes reveal a Pi Day mystery picture!
It's hands-on, it's self-checking, and it connects Pi Day to your transformations unit.
A digital Google Slides version is also included, so you have both options covered.
5. Multiplying Fractions Pi Puzzle
Grades 5–8 | Print | Cut & Paste Puzzle
Students solve 20 multiplying fractions problems, match the pieces by answer, and build a chain that forms a Pi symbol!
It works beautifully as a Pi Day activity AND as a standalone fractions activity any time during the year- so it's another resource you'll reach for well beyond March 14th!
Best for: Pi Day, fractions unit review, early finishers, math centers.
Tips for Making the Most of Pi Day in Middle School
Here are a few ways to make March 14th really special in your classroom:
Run activities as stations. Set up 4–5 stations around the room, one activity per station, and rotate students every 15–20 minutes. It keeps the energy high and means every student experiences multiple activities in one period.
Plan your bulletin board in advance. The craftivity and translations mystery picture both make stunning displays. Have students complete these a day or two before Pi Day.
Connect to real life. Before diving into activities, spend 5 minutes asking students where they think circles and Pi show up in the real world. Pizza, wheels, clocks, planets, roller coasters .. the list is longer than they expect, and it gives the whole day more meaning.
Use the freebie as a finisher. I have a free Pi Day coloring page — "Irrationally Excited for Pi Day" — that's perfect for students who finish early or need a quiet wind-down at the end of the period. Grab it below!
Grab Everything in One Bundle
If you want to skip the planning and have your entire Pi Day sorted in one purchase, my Middle School Pi Day Activity Bundle has everything covered.
