10 FUN End of Year Math Projects for Middle School That Still Count as Math

The kids are done. You are definitely done

Teachers, we’re all familiar with the struggle at the end of the year when it comes to motivation. But just because testing is over doesn't mean the learning has to be. These end of year math projects for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade are the answer — real-world, hands-on, and actually engaging enough to pull students back in.

Because Middle Schoolers Need to Touch Everything Anyway

All 10 projects-no scrolling.

By the end of the year, most middle schoolers need more than a pencil and good intentions. They need to build something, measure something, move something around, or at the very least feel like they are doing more than filling in boxes on a page. That is why hands-on maths projects work so well in those final weeks. They keep students busy in the best possible way while still giving you real maths practice, not just time-fillers.

For the Creatives

If you have students who would rather create than calculate, these are the projects they tend to latch onto. The Tessellations Project gives students a chance to work with transformations, while adding their artistic flair. The Geometry Zoo brings in area, perimeter, surface area, and volume through a visual design task. And the Sandcastle Designer is great for those budding engineer students who like to build, plan, and see their ideas come together. If you have a class full of students who would happily color, draw, design, and create all day if given the chance, these are the projects to put in front of them.

If You’re Going to Do End of Year, You May as Well Commit

A strong end-of-year or summer theme can do a lot of the heavy lifting. My Summer Job at the Coffee Shop, Running a Summer Camp, and Plan a Summer BBQ all tap into that end-of-year mood while still keeping the maths meaningful. Plus, they are easy to build into a full theme day if you want to be a little extra (like me, ha!)….. or just use as they are!

My Summer Job at the Coffee Shop

Want to make it extra memorable? Transform your classroom into a Starbucks-style café! Dim the lights, play lo-fi coffee shop music, and let students earn "café loyalty stamps" for completing each section.

Running a Summer Camp

Turn your classroom into a summer camp for the day. Add lanterns, camp-style décor, themed stations, and nature sounds or acoustic music

Plan a summer BBQ

Turn it into a backyard BBQ theme day with checkered tablecloths, lantern lights, summer music, and real coolers for students to compare on the day they complete the 3D net task. The teacher guide even includes extra ideas for classroom setup and differentiation.

For the Future CEOs and Side-Hustlers

These are for the future entrepreneurs - and for you to tick off that financial literacy unit! Running a Lemonade Stand, Food Truck Start-Up, and Choosing a Cell Phone Plan all have that practical, business-minded angle that tends to get better buy-in, especially with older middle schoolers. They get students working with pricing, unit rates, markup, and comparing costs in a way that feels useful instead of forced. If you have students who are always asking when they are ever going to use this, these are the projects to put in front of them.
