Teaching Ratios and Measurement? Try This Free Hands-On Potion Lab Project

Middle school brains need more than notes and examples - they need something to do.
And teachers? We need something that doesn’t take an entire Sunday to prep.

That’s why I made the Potion Lab Project - a hands-on way to teach ratios and measurement. Students scale recipes, convert units, and calculate volume while building their own 3D potion lab. It’s low-prep and also free!

Everything’s ready to print - templates, labels, and calculation sheets. You just need scissors, glue, and a few toilet paper rolls. It takes about two to three class periods, and it’s equally useful as an end-of-year project for 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.

The Potion Lab has become one of my favorite ways to close out our ratios and proportions unit. It’s one of those projects that makes students curious again - they start building and suddenly the math part is visual and easier to grasp.

You won’t find this one on TpT or anywhere else. It’s my way of saying thanks for being part of this community of teachers who want math meaningful, engaging, and FUN!
